Our mission & vision

Misingi implements development projects in the Endamarariek Ward and Engarese, Tanzania. These projects focus on education, water supply, food, agriculture, culture, and entrepreneurship. They aim to strengthen the local community in a sustainable way. Starting from local demands and widespread local support, these projects lay the foundations (Kiswahili: misingi) for the future. Misingi follows the philosophy of effective altruism, which combines empathy, rationality, and scientific evidence.

In Tanzania, Misingi focuses on people who, despite their limited resources, want to take control of their fate. Consequently, these individuals serve as both the target group and project partners. Misingi provides resources but relies on a high level of local participation. Every successful project is based on enthusiasm, dialogue, consultation, and involvement.

As a networking organization, Misingi unites passionate individuals, organizations, and companies in Belgium who identify with the aforementioned principles and want to work respectfully to improve the target group’s situation. Misingi creates the conditions for them to successfully carry out projects. Finally, Misingi offers individuals with a passion for Tanzania who lack the time and resources to start their own project the opportunity to meaningfully support ongoing projects.

• Misingi does not invent projects. Rather, each project arises from local demand and need.
• Each project is tested against a number of criteria:
  • First, is the proposed project feasible in terms of time and resources?
  • How will the entire community benefit from the intended result?
  • How will the target group participate?
  • Once completed, will the project be sustainable?
  • Is the project climate-neutral and in harmony with the environment?
  • Does the project promote opportunities for poor and disadvantaged groups?
• Misingi provides financing, but a limited contribution (financial or logistical) from the community is proof of shared commitment. The local community manages, executes, and reports.
• Misingi uses local expertise, locally available materials, and local human resources as much as possible. The ability to maintain, repair, adjust, finance, etc., the completed projects is necessary.
• Misingi members work on a voluntary, unpaid basis. Misingi does not incur unnecessary costs and always keeps in mind that it works with and thanks to the contributions of sponsors and supporters. Every expenditure is carefully accounted for, and transparent accounting records are available upon request.
